Advice for Pain Relief The following can help to reduce pain and stiffness prior to treatment and also speed improvement after treatment. Ice Ice reduces inflammation, pain and discomfort. Do not apply to bare skin and always cover with a dry cloth, or if very acute a damp cloth. Application - 15 minutes on, 5 minutes off, 15 minutes on. Then stop. If the problem is more chronic, i.e. long term, then alternate cold with heat, e.g. hot water bottle Application - 5 minutes cold, 5 minutes hot, 5 minutes cold, 5 minutes hot, 5 minutes cold. Then stop. This has the effect of opening and closing blood vessels and therefore reducing inflammation through tissue drainage. Ibuprofen/Paracetamol Use as directed on the tablet box if you have taken it before with no side effects or consult pharmacist for advice. Ibuprofen has an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing soreness and swelling in tissues, thus improving joint mobility and giving the body the opportunity to heal. Paracetamol is a pain-killer.
